The history of Lithuanian photography has long been waiting to be systemised and researched. In 1939 Jan Bulhak published a book about 19th c. Vilnius photographers. In the Soviet period Virgilijus Joudakis researched early Lithuanian photography, but his work A History of Lithuanian Photography. 1854 - 1940 was published as late as 1996 in independent Lithuania. At that time scholary conferences started to be held, books of photographs by Kazys Daugela, Balys Buracas, Jozef Czechowicz, Benedikt Henrik Tyszkiewicz, articles by Dainius Junevicius, Margarita Matulyte about the development of photography in Lithuania in 19th c., and publications by National Museum Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes, Tintypes in Lithuanian Museums as well as Vilnius Photography. 1858 - 1915 appeared.
