The Seafarers ANCIENT MARINERS

The text is accompanied by many maps, photos, renderings, and drawings.it discusses the ancient and mysterious "Sea Peoples," the Egyptians, Greeks, Phoenicians, and the Romans. The book describes maritime development in and around the Mediterranean from Achaean times through the Roman Empire.

Some highlights include a short description of the alleged counterclockwise circumnavigation of Africa by the Phoenicians around 600 BCE. I have read of this story before. The only problem is that no archeological evidence has ever been uncovered. The Greek historian Herodotus is the only source of the story. There is also an account of the Iliad and the Trojan War and the Odyssey, the various wars between the Greeks and the Persians, and histories of trade throughout the Mediterranean.

There are also some interesting renderings of the supposed giant twin-hulled "forty" war galley of Ptolemy IV and also of his huge royal barge on the Nile.
