Angels have been an eternally fascinating subject for philosophers and writers (who have long mused over such curious imponderables as how many angels might dance on the head of a pin and how, with their huge wings, angels could don their glorious raiment). In particular, angels have proved a fertile source of inspiration for artists since ancient times.
